Aged residential care occupancy for the 31 December 2015 quarter

For the third consecutive quarter national occupancy rates have remained steady. Since the June 15 quarter, overall occupancy rates have remained steady around 87.9% (Figure 1). This follows a significant period of change since September 2013 (Figure 1).

Compared to the previous year, occupancy for the December 2015 quarter rose significantly by 2% (Figure 1).
Similarly, if ORA ARRC-certified beds[1] were excluded from overall occupancy there was little change in overall occupancy for the December 2015 quarter compared to the September quarter (Figure 2). Compared to the previous year (December 2014), overall occupancy remained the same (Figure 2).

Table 1 illustrates the overall occupancy for each DHB region as at 31 December 2015. West Coast DHB region had the highest occupancy (95.1%) compared to Lakes DHB region which had the lowest occupancy (78.7%).

West Coast DHB region also experienced the greatest occupancy increase between the September 2015 and December 2015 quarters (12.1%) (Table 1). Taranaki DHB region had the greatest decrease in occupancy over the same period (5.1%) (Table 1).
Occupancy by bed type shows dedicated rest home beds had the highest occupancy. That is, 90.0% of 12,423 dedicated rest home beds were occupied. 89.8% of dedicated hospital beds were occupied, along with 88.8% of swing/dual service beds, 87.6% of dementia beds and 87.8% of psychogeriatric beds.
Table 2 illustrates the breakdown of occupancy across the different DHB regions by service/bed type.

[1] ORA ARRC-certified beds are rooms that are sold to residents under an occupancy rights agreement (ORA) that are also certified under the Age Related Residential Care (ARRC) Services Agreement to supply services to the resident in that room if and when they require this type of care.
